Food and queerness are intrinsically intertwined. Each shapes social perceptions, cultural narratives, and personal identities. In their combination, food becomes a point of resistance, and queerness a way of seeing; altering our perceptions and understanding of society, politics, culture and the environment.
Directed by The Gramounce Journal's editor and AltMA tutor Barney Pau, the Queer Food short course brings together all of these unique areas and analyses them through the lens of art. From historical taboos to contemporary activism, participants are exposed to a diverse range of unique and innovative perspectives, reflecting the inherent diversity of both food and queerness, with each session directed by a different speaker, artist, or theorist whose practice explores the complexity of queer food.
The course also explores what the difference between queerness and queering is, allowing those who join us to develop their own understanding to equip them in developing a unique practice to add their voice to the conversation. From theory to practice, the premise of this course is to develop a more profound understanding of food through queer systems of thinking, this course is designed for those interested in exploring food beyond taste and nourishment—seeing it instead as a site of identity, power, and transformation. Queer is not singular, and this is reflected in the residency's broad range of London-based cultural institutes and community spaces, and diverse global cohort of online speakers.
Through historical case studies, theoretical texts, and lived experiences, participants will engage with topics such as the history and politics of consumption, queer domesticity, alternative economies, and how food can serve as both resistance and reclamation. It is a timely response to the growingly hostile social perceptions of queerness and queer people, both as a means to highlight the innovation found in queer thinking and as a way to disseminate the knowledge systems and methodologies this thinking creates.

The course consists of two main components:
Participants may choose to attend just the online seminars or combine them with the residency for a deeper engagement.
For the online portion of the course, each attendee will have the opportunity to present their work and interests, as well as book one-on-one time with the course leaders to discuss their creative practice. The 8-week course will also involve a small task for participants to work on and develop before the closing session. The idea behind this is to explore how to put the course’s learning into practice in real-time, followed by the opportunity to share feedback and ideas.

Rooted in Cameroonian and Afro-diasporic heritage, Afrofeminist struggles, sci-fi and a wide tradition of black music, their work explores intimacy, love, joy, and vitality from a Black, Queer, and Afrofuturist perspective through utopian, erotic, and spiritual imaginaries through music, DJing under the name SOÑXSEED, poetry, performance, fruit and plant matter, and other mixed media. Soñ Gweha crafts immersive spaces that exist between worlds, reconfiguring past-present-future temporalities. Their creations invite reflection on collective and individual liberation, offering spaces where grief, comfort, and celebration intertwine in a continuous dance.

Isaias Hernandez is an environmentalist, educator, and writer devoted to improving environmental literacy through content creation, storytelling, and public engagements. Isaias is more commonly known by his moniker, Queer Brown Vegan: the independent media platform he started to bring intersectional environmental education to all. His journey to deconstruct complex issues, while centering diversity and authenticity, has resonated with a worldwide audience.
He has produced and written his own climate-independent web series, Teaching Climate Together, which exists to bring environmental education to everyone by working with scientists, researchers, and community leaders. He is currently working on his first-ever debut book, Dear Environmentalist: Why Ecological Wealth Is Our Only Way Forward, set to be published in April 2027 with Hachette Book Group under the Timber Press imprint.
Isaias has been featured in several noteworthy publications, including the digital cover of VOGUE alongside Billie Eilish and seven other environmental activists, New York Times, The Guardian, and Business Insider. Tej’s practice reflects on/through/and, hopefully, beyond his time practicing methods that were once unquestionably foregrounded by regarding his embodiment as easily disentangled from the expansive milieu of others, alive, dead and resisting this binaries. He feels his present endeavours mark a turn from this, toward a yearning for 'a place where the soul can rest', as spoken of by bell hooks (2009). He aspires to this through being in both an allotment and the gardens at OmVed Gardens: in these places, he grows food, walks; crafts structures, writes, and attempts to share all of this with others, in the hope the sharing brings to 'them' what it has for 'him'.
For now, he’d like to share that in the last few years, he took to tending to young fruit trees, bought 'bare-root' from supermarkets, and then, donning a hi-vis to appear ‘official’, has been planting these out on the housing estate where he lives. Seeing others notice and start tending for the trees, without prompt or signage indicating their presence, has nourished his story telling endeavours.

Everything is made fresh on the day and we take pride in the fact our food echos the diverse and multicultural environment that makes Gospel Oak and London what it is.
When we set up Mother in 2019, we wanted to create a space that acted as an extension to our kitchen table, creating a cosy environment to bring the local community together with food, arts events and community outreach projects.
In order to facilitate access to participants from less favourable economic backgrounds and people of colour, The Gramounce offers a limited amount of scholarships opportunities for the online course.

Barney is a London-based culinary creative working at the confluence of food, art, and writing, whose practice focuses on food futures, queering consumption, and foraging and fermenting as social resistance. He believes food, in its ubiquity, transcends language as a mode of communication, and by applying it as an artistic medium it can be used to impart new thinking. In his practice, he uses food both to communicate his thinking and as a point of departure for research.
In 2021 he founded Finger Food Magazine : a contributor-based space for stories, artwork, and essays, in any and all mediums, exploring cooking, craft, and creation. When he’s not jamming ferments into jars, peering at plants on the pavement, or writing ramblings for my Substack , you can usually find him foraging for his food or reading books on baking.
